The music of bassist/vocalist Jim Ferguson will be featured on the January 20, 2008, broadcast of Jazz From The Archives, produced by The Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, http://newarkwww.rutgers.edu/IJS/JazzFromTheArchives. Double bass studies at Ottawa Suzuki Strings "Sound Encounters" music camp in Ottawa, Kansas, June 11-20, 2008, will featured guest artist Harold Robinson, principal bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Upcoming Performances
of the Harbison Concerto for Bass Viol

The concerto was commissioned by the family of double bassist Hunter Capoccioni, in memory of his father, and the International Society of Bassists, which put together a consortium of fifteen orchestras to introduce the new work to listening audiences.

Upcoming performances include soloist Fora Baltacigil with The Minnesota Orchestra, February 7-9, 2008. Future performances also include:

February 8-10, 2008, Florida Orchestra, with Principal Bassist Dee Moses, soloist, Christoph Campestrini, conductor;
April 11-13, 2008, Greenville Symphony Orchestra with soloist Tim Pitts, coductor, Edvard Tchivzhel.

Arizona Bass Players, Inc. is a new non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational and performance opportunities for all Arizona bassists. The first annual ABP Festival and Workshop will be held March 6-9, 2008, at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ, co-sponsored by the ASU School of Music, the University of Arizona School of Music, and the Northern Arizona University School of Music. Featured guest artists will include Catalin Rotaru, Patrick Neher, Joel DiBartolo, Rufus Reid, Robert Kassinger and Miloslav Jelinek. Robertson and Sons Violin Shop of Albuquerque, NM, is sponsoring a competition for bassists ages 16 to 22 years, and donating an instrument as first prize. The festival "Kontrabass-Kaleidoskop" (Double Bass Kaleidoscope) in Michaelstein/Germany, will be held March 10-15, 2008, Silvio Dalla Torre, artistic director. The festival faculty includes Rinat Ibragimov (London), Stephan Petzold (Berlin), François Rabbath (Paris), Hans Roelofsen (Amsterdam), Radoslav Šašina (Bratislava), David Sinclair (Basel); and the musician and psychologist Andreas Burzik (Bremen) will lecture on"Practicing in Flow." The ¡Viva el Bajo! South Texas Double Bass Masterclass will be held at the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg, TX, March 29-30. Event organizer George Amorim has invited guest artist Jeff Bradetich to teach masterclasses, lead a teachers training session, and perform a solo recital on Saturday evening. The two-day event will also include: a Young Bassist session taught by Sonia Ray; solo and orchestral masterclasses; private lessons for selected students; solo adjudication; a workshop for school teachers; and a performance by the Pan American Double Bass Ensemble. The 38th Annual University of Northern California/Greeley Jazz Festival, April 24-26, 2008, will feature presents its first National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Night, with NEA Jazz Masters bass/guitar duo Ron Carter and Jim Hall, and trombonist Slide Hampton with the UNC Jazz Lab Band I. Also in the line-up will be the vocal group Take 6 and Chris Potter’s Underground. The festival is the largest event of its kind in the nation and the longest-running jazz festival in Colorado. Players from around the world will travel to Paris for Bass 2008 at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique, October 30th - November 3rd, 2008. Renowned artists of all genres - classical, contemporary, avant-garde and jazz – will give masterclasses, showcases, clinics, recitals and evening concerts. There will also be an exhibition of publishers, makers and bass shops, and a composition competition. The player's competition will have 5 categories: solo, orchestra, jazz, contemporary and mini-bass (ages 7 to 18 years).
